What are some good musicals that fit the type I'd like to watch?

If you love Barbra, start with Funny Girl. For what you are looking for I could recommend the sort of rock opera types of muscials like Rent and Spring Awakening. I also watched Bare recently but agree with you that it was a bit of a pop-opera. So if you are specifically looking for movie musicals then Rent and Funny Girl will suffice, but honestly it's nothing like the seeing the real thing. Watch them on youtube.
